Of course there are many issues which effect violent crime rates, but if you went looking for one factor which had the most profound effect it would be family breakdown. Specifically, fatherless children.

You're correct, the bulk of crimes are committed by young people, specifically young men. Young men, raised without a stable fatherly influence to guide them.

Poverty ranks down the list as causal factors.
