You need to get over this steroid thing. Farmers are working to get a healthier product to market. That's how they make their living. Yes, some steroids and antibiotics are used to make sure you're not eating roadkill. And yes they do need to be slaughtered. I don't think you'd want to eat a live cow.

Getting back to the fish thing, the producers usually use well water. No run off and no chemicals. I've found a file on what you shouldn't eat if caught in Illinois waters. It's Adobe and I appologise in advance.
