I agree with that. IMO, if the dominant group would just take a somewhat more magnanimous posture informally, the courts might never see these issues. It's a simple courtesy to ask people if they mind rather than just impose yourself on them.

I don't consider possible peer pressure or feelings of discomfort with the idea of not going along with everyone else to be the same as actual government coercion.

This is such a borderline case IMO. I agree with you on the peer pressure. I disagree with you regarding discomfort instigated by the behaviors of school officials.
