My guess, Tim, is that the men who throw themselves on grenades ... would never in their lives have imagined doing such an act. Probably in many of those cases they would have imagined themselves doing the exact opposite. This is one of those things like "What does it feel like to die?" No one will ever know -- until it happens to them. Only if you or I are ever confronted with that instantaneous "opportunity" -- only then will we find out what we would do -- and we still will probably not know why. So I agree with you that rationality and reason and religion give no answers.
