RIYADH (AP)--Saudi Arabia has issued a decision permitting 22 occupations to be filled only by Saudi nationals, newspapers reported Tuesday.

The decision, issued by Labor Minister Ali al-Namlah, is seen as an attempt to reduce unemployment among Saudis, unofficially standing at 20%.

The papers didn't say when the decision was issued.

The positions to be restricted to Saudis include administrative managers, purchasing managers, tour guides, car salesmen, public relations officers and secretaries.

Last year, authorities banned non-Saudis aged under 40 from working in gold shops.

Private companies employing more than 20 people must employ at least six Saudis.

The current Saudi 2000-2004 development plan aims at providing jobs for 817,000 Saudis, including 782,000 private sector positions.

To achieve that goal, authorities must come up with 311,000 new jobs and nationalize 471,000 jobs.

There are 4.5 million foreigners and 2.5 million Saudis employed in the private sector in the oil-rich kingdom.
