I agree with the "turgid" comment, though I suspect your comment about tek's reaction might be a bit off mark. That essay strikes me as being outside the usual territory of his interests. Wallerstein, however, has always needed an editor. He's one more illustration of the often made remark in academia that if you wish to see genuinely bad writing just check out the sociologists.

As for the content of his arguments, I find some helpful, some not but almost always learn from trying to think my way through some of his more cryptic observations.

As for the use of the term "hegemony", my impression is it's now part of the general language, not just a lefty term.
