the truth lies somewhere between. While alaska oil maybe 10 years away you should consider US that US oil reserves, russian oil and current us oil may satisfy oil requirements for the next 10 years. While there are cars in production as of now that are using alternative to oil sources of energy the truth is that it would probably take far more than 10 years before we would see any noticable reduction in oil demand.
As far as crisis, well our economy is not starving for oil yet but we are forced to deal with OPEC's virtual monopoly on oil supply - in my view it is a crisis.
As far as money well spend, if we are to develop oil strategy for the next year that would put us in lesser dependance from OPEC it would be money saved not spent.
