Perhaps there is such a thing as political suicide, and no one wants to commit it?

And if there is no such thing, than people like atheists and agnostics who represent a very small contingency, and probably represent no majority anywhere, have no representatives to protect their interest, do they? I think that is pretty clear given what happened in congress. So only the courts can protect them. Sometimes the courts offer the only protection from the majority. You've given several good reasons for this in your post. So either the courts protect the minority, or no one does.

Perhaps they were too in love with their positions to tell the truth? Perhaps there is such a thing as political suicide?

Perhaps there is such as thing as politicians... <g>

Cohen says legislators didn't have the guts to stand up for a little girl in CA. The little girl didn't bring the suit - her rather weird father did.

You got me on that one. I flinched when I read that, too. I don't like that jerk any more than you do. But I stand by the rest.
