"So now we have Enron and World Com. It's hard to see much of any "human spirit" in the mess."

Society is bombarded with a plethora of information. We are drowning in a sea of information. We are become separated from our sense of appreciation and wonder.

The article speaks of the erotic. It speaks of indulging the inner desire for love and beauty--for art. For me, it means learning to connect with the deep sense of wonder and appreciation that is shared between people: it may be reading "The Mayor of Casterbridge"; it may be watching "O" in Vegas; it may be lstening to Mozart, and trying to hear what he heard; or it may be walking up into the pasture and sitting down by the creek for awhile.

The finest moments in my life are when I am touched by the consummate skill and greatness of another--those wonderful people who carry us to the farthest shores of human effort and artistry. We have all experienced a soaring soul.

Now, when I say "soul", I speak metaphorically. I do not know anything about any God or Gods. Everything I love and value is in the living and the actualized. Indeed, there is no uglier experience for me than to pick up whatever ancient tribal self serving drivel has survived--in this religious dogma or that...and to read the brutal ugliness that existed in the minds and the acts of savage and barbaric peoples. That any human being can find joy in reading about how "God" sent bears to kill 42 kids is beyond me. That they believe this happened is beyond me. To exalt what is dark and savage is beyond me.

So I do not suggest we lose our wonder. I merely suggest we raise our standards.
