I learned it the other way. I posted about that earlier. My way makes sense to me. I'm not saying that your way is wrong. If it is wrong, then it's at least common. Without an authority, though, I will continue to consider it at least an open question, although I prefer my own version which is logically consistent with the principles of capitalization in American English.

And if "God" is generic, would you please tell me the specific name of the Christian or Catholic deity? I never learned any other name but "God" when I was in catechism.
