the lobbies have in the past shouted from rooftops proclaiming that the Israeli Arabs are very prosperous, they shun violence and that it is Arafat and his band of thugs who are instigating the Palestenians to terror, thereby causing the present misery of the Palestenians. Here is a story from the LA times and from this story it does not seem like what the Israeli lobby has claimed all along is true and that it is mere propaganda

That's a very black and white take on things, Chinu. After all, I can truthfully say that the US is a secular country with equal rights for all and that African-Americans shun violence and are very prosperous. And if we are comparing America to the rest of the world, this is certainly true. It does not mean that African-Americans share equally in prosperity with white Americans, or that they have no legitimate complaints about discrimination. Or, for that matter, that they are just as peaceful as white people as a whole. But the latter statements do not make the former "mere propaganda."

Now, I certainly admit that this proposed ruling is racist and politically stupid. I would also point out that the Israeli Attorney General has declared it illegal, and it has sparked a "divisive national debate." Just for comparison purposes, it is the stated policy of the PA to render any land they control 'Judenrein'. They have also made it a capital crime to sell land to Jews. And we needn't even mention the laws of the Arab countries, which generally don't even permit any Jews to reside in the country.

Israel is an oasis of democracy, but it is not realistic to expect them to remain unaffected by the conditions they live under, or to behave always as if they had Belgium and Canada for neighbors. Human nature also applies to Jews.

Don't you think that along with Arafat, Ariel Sharon should also go, if there has to be any hope of peace in that region?

Yes, but after the Oslo War is over. He's the right man for the job while the war is on.

The proposed law is bad. But note - it is at this point a proposed law which came in response to a landmark decision by the Israeli Supreme Court in March 2000 that said Arab citizens were equally entitled to purchase, lease or live on state-owned land.. Also note - Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said his Labor Party would "fight with all its power against the racist decision"--even if it means quitting the government. The bill still faces legal hurdles in the Israeli Knesset, or parliament, before it becomes law.

Want to place a bet the bill will become law?
