Sun Solaris only has to face hardware designed by Sun (a closed hardware environment). Microsoft has forced upon us 6 different generations of operating systems accommodating an infinite number of different hardware configurations. Closed is ultimately good. Wireless backbones (Imode) that have gone casters-up thus knocking out service to entire area codes is wildly embarrasing. I'm not too enthusiastic about this marriage. IBM loves to deploy a public-source OS known as Linux. Compared to Solaris, Linux doesn't thread. Process count explodes exponentially on impact. One part breaks, you have to find where all the shrapnel is hid.
