Why does Shannon think GKI didn't have strong returns in 1999? You had qualcomm and jds uniphase in the portfolio didn't you?

I think he's saying that the total return of the 99 GKI from 99 to present is negative, not that the return in 99 was negative. For a long-term investor, the return from 99-02 is more interesting than the return in 99 (of course I'd really like to know the return from 99-09...)

Notice Buffett buying tech now, you can't get much more of an endorsement for b&h than that. Never thought I'd see it.

Not exactly. He bought some debt in one particular, very well capitalized telecom firm. He didn't exactly buy a bunch of QCOM LEAPs. My guess is that telecom debt has gotten beaten down tremendously lately, and Buffett noticed that Level 3 in particular was still quite solid.
