Nancy, re >in past cycles the prices went a lot lower
than the current trough. current bookings are worse than
1998, and amat was between 5 and 7 bucks at the bottom of
1998.
<

prices went a lot lower - correct
current bookings are worse - not so, they're higher
than the '98 trough

look at AMAT vs bookings suite101.com

now look for a bookings bar in Feb '99 about as high as the
bar for May '02. From the chart eyeball AMAT price then. A
little below 20, isn't it? About the same as now.

This is something I had not looked at before. Thanks for
the inspiration. Below are monthly prices for that period.
You can see today's price is not far above those and
Applied is in much better shape now, just judging by their
backlog. Backlog in '99 was about a billion and is over 3
billion now. Here's a backlog chart
suite101.com

To summarize: today's price is not far above the price
in Feb '99 when SEMI bookings were just a little lower than
in May '02. Today Applied has almost 3x the backlog it had in Feb '99.

Nancy, thanks again!
