LB, Lets be careful with our terminology. Enforcing laws that may have been overlooked in the past is quite different than murder. Ethnic cleansing is a euphemism for genocide. It has also been used to clear communities of unwanted ethnic groups through forced deportation - but these were citizens and permanent residents not illegal immigrants. Kumar is of Indian heritage and is conflicted on the post 9-11 response because some people mistakenly think he is from the mid-east. As a result he over-generalizes. If for example - the IRA had done this, would Irish Americans be under scrutiny? - Yes. Would Irish looking people be given second looks - Yes. As a red haired Irish-American born over there (Dad was USAF - and based in UK) I would probably get extra scrutiny. Having lived in Boston and frequented Irish pubs I would probably have FBI phone taps (I am partial to Guinness - must be genetic :-). John

Israeli ouster of Sari Nusseibeh nytimes.com two possibilities. a) the Israelis are really, really smart. recognizing that Israel's best hope lies in nice guy Palestinians like Nusseibeh, but that the nice guys' wussiness and acceptability to Israelis tarnishes their standing with fellow Palestinians, the govt. has cleverly decided to boost Nusseibeh's standing in his own community by slapping him around. b) the Israelis are really, really dumb. holding zealously to their old zero-tolerance policy of any and all expression of Palestinian national identity or role in any part of Jerusalem, they cannot see why someone like Nusseibeh is their last best hope for a decent life, and so treat him just like they would any other PA thug--because a wog is a wog is a wog. tb@takeyourpick.com
