So I keep loose tabs on my companies and sectors to see if my initial confidence in their long-term future prospects seems misplaced; I keep a lazy eye out for prospects that might be worthy of joining the club; I hold; I try to buy more of a range of things on a regular basis; I get on with the rest of my life."

Very well written, and probably all a non-professional investor can reasonably expect to do.

I agree with this. However, how do we factor in the fact that the playing field is not level? One illusion created in the last few years (along with the one tekboy mentioned...that it was "different this time") was that the information provided by the internet had levelled the playing field for the small investor. Recent disclosures of insider trading and corporate corruption at the highest levels of business and government have proven that to be very false. Bush's weak speech yesterday illustrated how completely unregulated these companies are (statements such as CEO's will have to be accountable...audits will have to be checked...you mean they HAVEN'T BEEN?!!!)

How does the small investor have faith in a game that has (and will continue to be) rigged? How do we trust the information that we're getting to be able to invest with any confidence?
