CSCO...AMAT...relationship...

If CSCO rallies it will carry AMAT and the other semi's with it.

Brian, the fact that a discredited firm like ML still influences stocks as much as they do speaks volumes.

An upgrade of CSCO does not necessarily mean that AMAT should be upgraded. One good reason would be that the chip makers have enough capacity to satisfy demand from CSCO without buying more equipment.

If CSCO is recovering and gets a Strong Buy, shouldn't that mean AMAT will recover and should also deserve a Strong Buy, since the equipment CSCO buys is filled of all things, chips!

The chip makers were able to fill CSCO's needs when CSCO was selling 25% more equipment than it is now.

As I stated before, end demand for chips is the key driver for chipmaking equipment and end demand is stagnant. I don't know the bottom for AMAT but would not be surprised to see single digits.

Brian, It is a bit silly for Merrill to allow these subtle ratings changes to take place. In September, when Merrill's most recently announced change to its rating system goes into effect, CSCO and AMAT will likely be rated the same: "Buy" since stocks currently rated Strong Buy, Buy, or Neutral will have to be mapped to either Buy or Neutral, but in adding to the ridiculousness, some Neutral-rated stocks will have higher return expectations than some Buy-rated stocks.
