S&P Cuts EBay, Paypal to Hold

EBay (EBAY ) and Paypal (PYPL ): Downgrades to 3 STARS (hold) from 4 STARS (accumulate)
Analyst: Scott Kessler July 24 2002

S&P says it likes eBay's business fundamentals and potential, as well as its proposed all-stock acquisition of Paypal, but has become increasingly concerned about the stock.

The July 9 news that eBay was being added to the S&P 500 has supported its price recently. However, S&P thinks eBay is vulnerable to a notable sell-off in this market environment, because of its 2002 price-earnings multiple of 69. Although S&P thinks eBay is attractive with its 50% growth rate, recent breaches of its 200- and 50-moving averages suggest prudence is appropriate.
