isn't switzerland fairly homogenous demographically?

what do you mean? there are four official languages, two of them being french and german. i've heard franco-germanic combinations referred to as many things, but homogenous is not usually one of them.

--Switzerland has good unemployment insurance and social net and low taxes...--

How big is Switzerland? How big is Germany? The difference in size makes the comparison a bit absurd in my mind. Try comparing the economics of Rhode Island to California sometime. Are you aware that it is impossible for anyone to save up to buy a house in Switzerland?? Sounds weird for such a prosperous country but just ask any of the Swiss about it. You have to work all your life and if you are lucky you can pay for it before you die and your children inherit it. Yet even the Junkies shooting heroin in Switzerland drive Mercedes. Not exactly your average country in any way.

Switzerland is a tiny banking district in the mountains. Quote all the figures you like but I think comparing it to a country the size of Germany, America or Canada is meaningless. Reminds me of what Mark Twain said about statistics, take a man and put one of his feet in boiling water and the other in ice water and on the average he is comfortable.
