CORRECT ... Nil, none, nada. AMD is solely dependent on UMC for 300mm manufacturing. Not a "good thing", IMHO.

Which begs the question, "how is AMD going to get SOI ported over to 300mm?"

Re: "AMD has no plans to move to 300mm independently."

Yesterday, Bear Stearns had the following in a report:

"Most new digital circuit designs are being taped out for a 0.13 micron process technology, with many designs using copper interconnect. This type of process technology represents a relatively small percentage of total industry manufacturing capacity and we believe will be fully utilized by the end of 2002. Further demand growth will likely cause a shortage of available capacity, leading to lengthening lead times and stable or firming prices in our view."

If AMD doesn't own the 300mm capacity, they will end up paying a premium to use the available capacity. This will give INTC a cost advantage. Or should I say a further cost advantage? In fact, the profits may be large from owning this much needed manufacturing ability.
