VIX outside of Bollinger bands is the most reliable way to use this indicator. There was a study published some time ago which showed a profitable trade for the next four days following such a point.

When I looked into the biotechs I learned about the term "cash burn rate," meaning how fast they were spending their cash and how long they could keep doing it without a major product success. I have to admit that this concept seemed a little too advanced for me. If the cash were not being burned, the idea of getting a company at its cash value is very attractive.

But it's true they bounce up really hard when they do bounce.
