The advantage of my current time zone is the chance to muse and do some research while the US crowd snores away their troubles.

The unavoidable headlines of the markets headed back to 1997 levels prompted me to pull up a five-year chart of the main averages (I omitted the Naz because we all know that story well):

finance.yahoo.com

Amazing - 15-25% total return over five years, probably less than you would have received from a 5-year CD bought in mid-1997 (anyone remember rates then?).

As demoralizing as the grind can be, looking at portfolio returns many, many times higher than the markets over this period is a small victory, for anyone who pulled it off.

Still playing "Survivor" until we can get back to investing instead.
