the other lesson is that if you've been playing the dark side and go long at VIX < 40 your heart will stop several times before you see green on your trade.

Like you so succinctly stated: You simply CANNOT be short a 40 VIX and a 70 VXN...you have to go long at these type of inflection points>> well said. Their are buysiders that will habitually jump in at tops and shorts that will habitually go short at VIX40/VXN70--which is a major NO!NO!:)
