The speed scaling advantages of "long pipelines made up of simpler microinstructions" were discussed years ago. The Droids said "Like, no way!" Now we are seeing the outcome.

There used to be a poster here named "Scumbria" who had considerable uP design experience. His position was that it was the extended pipeline that allowed Athlon to scale better than CuMine. P4 went Athlon one better. It now seems that AMD has gone the other way with Hammer and it's lowered MHz headroom.
