So we have the Jordanians talking about a "limited US presence involved in defensive and humanitarian operations" and the Americans talking about a three-pronged attack with one prong attacking through Jordan. Doesn't this seem like they are talking about two fairly different things?

Yes, the public pronouncements of the Jordanians are, of necessity, muted. The private commitments may be more conditioned by how far advanced the Hashemites think Saddams nuclear program is. How many long and medium range rockets he has armed with VX, etc and so forth - and weight their risks accordingly. BTW, I may be the only human being on earth who believes Saddam has not given up the idea of dominance of the Arab world for himself or for his heir apparent Qusay. :o}

I also expect Sharon and Bush will have thoroughly discussed joint US and Israeli responses to attacks from Iraq on Israel. They didn't work the last time in provoking a wider war and this time both parties will be more prepared.
