That's an interesting article. I wonder if similar debates were taking place in Germany and Japan in the 1930's. Those two nations were the worst examples in that era of feelings of cultural superiority and (in Germany's case) religious intolerance leading to unspeakable brutality and hatred toward other human beings. Now both nations are largely pacifist and several degrees more tolerant than they were back then.

Of course, the change in those two cases was wrought by powerfully destructive wars, not the persuasive effects of internal dissent.
