i hadn't noticed that their online commissions rates have changed... have they?

they are increasing other fees though. I believe other brokers (etrade) are doing similar things. it costs them to keep accounts around; most brokerages are trying to minimize costs at the expense of losing certain types of accts.

HEY SIDNEY, I'm so frustrated with that crap firm I'm going out of bounds to get their clients to switch brokers!
