I don't particularly disagree with your views on this.

I was just reacting to the pompous wind-blown posturing by, er, another poster.

I do think this was a mad rush by all politicians to get on the right side of an explosive issue, and be quick about it. Which is not to doubt that most of them truly did feel that this was a highly inopportune time to be raising the pledge challenge.

A great many public and private figures acted much same way at the time of the McCarthy hearings. It is my view that much of McCarthy's case was true -- that we had fallen asleep at the switch in terms of allowing security risk persons to infiltrate government (which was a goal of Soviet leaders at the time). In crucifying the messenger, I think we lost sight of the message. It probably was not a bad thing at that time to raise consciousness about where people's loyalties really lay.

In the current instance, I think the politicos (both side of the aisle) are saying, "Hey, if most of you believe in God, and somehow God got in the pledge, I want you to know that I firmly oppose making a big deal about trying to get it out now." I think the part they really do believe in ... is the bad timing.

( P.S.- I am shortly meeting my daughter at the bus terminal -- she is coming in for a rare visit with us. So I won't playing here for the weekend).
