jp,

I agree & disagree. Crowe yes, Washington nope :-|

And Crowe was superb in Gladiator........ I also liked Virtuosity (1995).......... Mystery, Alaska (1999)........... Proof of Life (2000)

I know my POV is worth about next to nuttin', but I think it is not too much of a stretch of one's abilities to play a bad guy............. LOL, look around SI or the YAHOO threads........ they're a dime a dozen <ggg>.

BTW, how many Oscar's for best actor have gone to folks for portrayal of a bad guy? Not many 'eh?

Since 1927, there has been three for sure (including Danzell) & two maybe/maybe not bad guy Oscar winners......... in 75 years........

1991 : Anthony Hopkins in "THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS"

1987 : Michael Douglas in "WALL STREET"

*Maybe not* 1972 : Marlon Brando in "THE GODFATHER" (He played a mobster, but was not portrayed as a bad guy.)

*Maybe not* 1961 : Maxmilian Schell in "JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG" (He played counsel for the defense for those charged with crimes against humanity.)

Nothing against Danzell, but he has had several better performances than Training Day IMO. And as I said, playing a bad guy, well..... they're a dime a dozen....... so I'd have to have one really compelling performance to say it was Oscar material.

BTW, there were folks who were adamant that Crowe not win two years in a row....... a real rarity in Oscar's history........ seems that certain among his peers are not fond of Crowe & they wanted to make sure he wasn't placed among the likes of Tom Hanks & Spencer Tracy.

BWTHDIK anyway?
