Agree. Why should we have to run software to stop the pop-ups. If I want to buy something online, I go outside of SI.

Also would be nice if SI would bring back some of the quote options they took away, such as the Profile, and Industry Group buttons. I found those useful.

velo and others ...

if you're annoyed by the pop-ups .. this should cure that ...

here are a few links that will opt you out of a majority of those annoying pop up ads ...

some automatically put a cookie on your system to opt you out ... with the others, simply follow directions ..

networkadvertising.org

advertising.com

avenueainc.com

bluestreak.com

download.cometsystems.com

optout.doubleclick.net

fastclick.com

interpolls.com

x10.com

shouldn't take more than a few minutes to go through them ... going directly to the advertisers to opt out is a lot better than adding additional software which may or may not cause additional conficts with your
system ...

i go through these sites semi-annually and it works great ...

see ya.

Velo,

Do you have anything against classic mode on SI? (preferences - options - classic). Not a single ad, fast. Good for message boards. Before I switched to classic mode, I could not read the messages because of pop ups. Disgusting.

By the way, thanks for your input (Raptor's board). Very useful.

If anyone is interested, the best thing I've found is called The Proxomitron ( proxomitron.cjb.net ), it rewrites the html on the fly and employs user-developed scripts to do so, so it is extensible as new webpage annoyances are introduced. It is quite stable on windows 2000 and can catch some invasive snooping/tracking code as well as killing ads. It took a bit a fiddling to setup just the way I wanted it, but the default configuration provided is highly effective on popups and some other webpage irritators as well.

I haven't been able to kill all popups with it without affecting some sites that I want to let open additional windows, but it's been possible to configure it in a sort of "popups lite" mode that filters out most of the garbage and still lets my preferred sites operate normally.

I uderstand, just trying to help.

Let me reiterate about Mozilla. i have been trying it for a few weeks. It does not run in the background of anything. It is a leaner, meaner browser to replace IE and has excellent control of annoyances like pop-ups. I did not even know that SI had them!!!
