Semi, AMD can sit and wait and see if it's friendly white boxmakers can withstand the onslaught of the dell system.
Many of these white box makers pay more for their boxes, OS,memory and Mobos than dell does. The advantage the WB makers have is location and a relationship with their clients that keeps them in there(service, etc) So far the white boxers have done fairly well, since the aggregated whie box makers are larger than Dell.
One big help to the WB makers is the existence of the standard mobo and case that allows for many suppliers and price competition.
If the consolidation persists, then some WB makers will be forced out/smaller and it will not be dell. That means the AMD share will decline.
If AMD makes mobos as a first step it will get the chipset rveenue in house as well as the CPU revenues. The WB makers may be happy to buygood mobos. AMD may well stay away from cases....they are a total commodity, as well as power supplies, for the same reasons, save that it may well apply for FCC type certification of diverse case/PS/mobo combinations. that will allow the WB makers to get those cases, powersupplies and AMD mobos and make FCC approvaed boxes. This FCC approval is easy and straightforward to do, but is a nuisance. People often pay $5 extra for an approved set of these parts in small numbers. In volume they get their own FCC approcal.
So the easy first step to mobo maing is underway. Cases will probably not be done.

As for financing, in the direct model, financing is minimal as you get paid up front and get 30 days from sources, Dell style.

It is true that Mickey D has played most of his hole cards and me be told to FO, one fine day.

There's an alternative explanation for Mickey D's mindgames that is to Intel's benefit:
When Dell plays such games w/ AMD, Dell is able to obtain for "evaluation purposes" samples of AMD technology, test chips, documentation, etc., valuable intellectual property that is not obtainable on the market. It is not too far-fetched to believe that some of these "trade secrets" could and would be then be shared with choice partners (wink, wink).
Maybe Mickey D is in fact taking "orders" from Barrett et al.?!! ("Hey, get one of those Hammerlings for us, willya?")
