I don't think the Mc Carthy hearings tested people's loyalties to this country. They did test whether or not people would squeal on other people, even people they did not know, if it were in their best interest. And unfortunately the lesson of the Mc Carthy hearings was that rehabilitation for the people who were squealed on and were innocent (almost everyone who was squealed on) came too late, if at all.

If the same thing happened today we'd get the same result, irrespective of the example of the past. There have been plenty of previous examples- so I don't think we can expect too many lessons to be learned. Except, perhaps, expect people to squeal their heads off when they think it is in their interest to do so. Non-squealers are the exception to the rule, the world over.
