This year, it is the Central California coast because the national convention is in Riverside. Riverside is extremely hot and smoggy, so we want to avoid actually being in Riverside until the last possible moment.

We never drive direct to anywhere - the back roads are more fun. The trip down will take 6 days and about 700 miles, although Riverside is really only 500 miles away. Our travels take us to Monterey, through Big Sur to San Simeon (Hearst Castle), an inland detour for an overnight in Solvang (the overly picturesque "Danish Capital of America") and then on to Santa Barbara before we head back into the heat (and avoid the LA Basin) by taking the high desert roads on the north side of the San Gabriel Mountains to our destination.
