RE:"I believe that AMD needs to offer a reference line of PCs, Notebooks, and servers. Such a line should actually help, not hurt, sales by existing OEMs and whitebox builders by establishing a retail system price against which others can market their products.

A world clickable map of retailer should be maintained as an easy link to local retailer for a given type of product.

AMD sales teams should work hard to make sure good retailer are present everywhere on the map.

Do-it-Yourself users would also love to have access to a data base of system configuration using other vendor MB and graphic card that have been well tested by AMD and ranked according to stability or performance or scalability (OC).

PS: In the K7 debut, there where so mush difficulty to have MB manufacturing K7-board that I was thinking of such a vertical solution. They didn't do it at that time and I bet they will not do it this time nether.

I'm not so sure about the AMD-backed "reference design" idea. It's totally unnecessary for desktop machines since the build-it-yourself systems can be ordered with GeForce4 graphics and a Gig of DDR if you wish. AMD would be severely tempted to sell the notebook reference designs at lower and lower prices and that would piss off the OEMs a lot. There are notebooks with DDR and 15" screens now, but I haven't seen good graphics yet. Let's see how AMD motherboards go before doing the entire PC or entire notebook.

Dan- AMD needs to offer a reference line of PCs, Notebooks, and servers

I agree completely. AMD should produce a premium line of PC's, with a premium price.

Dan3,

Re: "For some reason, be it chance, a lack of resources at traditional OEM's, or
extortion by Intel (or a combination of the 3), AMD has been blocked from offering
its products to consumers."

Hahaha ... Good one, Dan3. Maybe it's AMD marketing "ignorance" that has insisted
on using "ModelHurtz" to confuse the consumer. Even the ordinary consumer now
knows that AMD is behind in performance. Looks like maybe the consumer is
the one who has "blocked" AMD products. <ggg> I find your conspiracy
theory very "amusing" ... I guess it's your way of conceding that AMD
has lost "market share". <ggg>

Make It So,

<<For some reason, be it chance, a lack of resources at traditional OEM's, or extortion by Intel (or a combination of the 3), AMD has been blocked from offering its products to consumers.>>

I would add piss-poor marketing and a lack of basic business sense.

Regardless of what anyone's opinion is on why AMD products are difficult to locate - the bottom line is they are difficult to locate, and somewhere within AMD land, they have failed. It is amazing to me that they can't figure this out. They need to fire their entire marketing & advertising department and start over. Problem is they've waited so long, they're in a very deep hole, since they'll lose so much money this year.

If Hammer is a killer, I hope they still have some money to market it correctly.

OTOH, I bought some AMD shares last week - and they're still positive! That's more than I can say for just about anything else I own.
