re"If the bottom CPU price is upped by $100"

If Intel could raise prices and still use their capacity they would. I think the sales would be impacted significantly if they did away with $75-149 cpu's. There are parts of the world that just can't afford it, and there are people who have systems that would just keep waiting for their next system (replacement or additional). It would also allow alternative cpu suppliers to thrive and get stronger. Alternative technologies would get a stronger look... PDAs with much cheaper CPUs might become an alternative with the addition of a docking station and a larger screen. I think the top end Xeons and Itaniums could help pull up ASP and profits, but I do not think it causes Intel to vacate the sub $150 cpu business. Even if they run out of capacity they could use foundries as they have in the past for chipsets. Intel flies high with a growing top line and a growing bottom line. As long as Intel can maximize that growth they will.
