The Dem. party is much more a polyglot with much more divergent views than the Rep. party.

I disagree. I don't see Democrats as having a greater divergence in views, or a greater tolerance of views that differ from the party line. Try to campaign against affirmative action in a liberal campus group, or if he was still alive you could ask former PA governor Casey how Democrats treat people who are pro-life.

Republicans range from those with views like Buchanan (close the borders to trade and immigration) to libertarians. They include people who are focused on fiscal conservatism, people who are focused on defense issues and foreign policy (who probably used to be focused on anti-communism and are now focused on anti-terrorism), and other who are focused on religion or abortion. The party contains people who want to roll back the reach of government, others who just want to shift a lot of the role to the states, and other who argue for huge federal programs to promote our "national greatness"

I see no evidence that the Democrats are the more diverse party in terms of outlook or world view or political philosophy.
