I think we are headed for disaster if we make our decisions on the basis of electronic town halls. For one thing, participation is very uneven across classes. For another, no effort is required to participate in them, so effect is regulated by the enthusiasm and scruples of the participants, and the time they have to spend. As we well know, a lot of people chanting "Hey Hey Ho Ho!" makes for a very poor result. For another, how do we know who is speaking? For example, you know I am Dave Ellen, but I do NOT know who you are, although I'm guessing you are from San Francisco which gives me some pause. For still another, it removes the obligation of our leaders to do their own thinking since all they have to do is poll the crowd.

So give me a republic every time. We can always throw the bastards out, but at least we have a chance at electing knowledgeable and scrupulous leaders.

A true democracy would be an utter disaster for America. The groups with the highest birth rates will eventually take over, and since the majority rules, there goes the constitution.
