I've been lurking along, following your problem because I've got a similar one. ABIT KT7A motherboard, AMD XP1500 cpu, 256 megs ram, WinME, GeForce32, etc, etc. And the durn thing freezes up.

Thought the processor had overheated. Got a new XP1700, same problem. Thought BIOS may be set for overprotective of cpu in regards to heat. Nope, and Nope.

I can turn it off, wait 15-20 minutes, and it'll re-boot, last about 5 minutes, then freeze up again.

Moved the HD to another box and worked it for hours. So, it doesn't seem to be a software problem.

Removed all the cards so the only one in was the AGP GeForce, and same problem.

Unless someone here has a better suggestion. I'm going to get another motherboard(NOT ABIT) and put that in tonight. I think one of the circuits is overheating and breaking connection.

You're not alone, Khalil Ayoub. There's problems enough for us all. Do you have another box you can relocate the HD to? It seems to me that if it works consistently in a different unit, that would eliminate software as the culprit.

I wish someone would validate that for me.

Khalil,

Do you have multiple users set up on your computer? If you do, it is possible that one user has Fast Find turned on. When that users logs on, they reactivate Fast Find for all users.

You might also want to log on in "Safe" mode and see if the problem goes away. Otherwise, it is starting to sound like a hardware problems.

B.K.

Khalil,

You might also want to try rebooting in DOS mode only.

First check your autoexec.bat and config.sys files to be sure that you aren't loading any programs that might use your hard drive. Then reboot the computer in DOS mode. If the problem recurs in DOS mode, then you probably are looking at a hardware problem. If the problem does not occur while in DOS mode, then the problem is probably software related.

Good luck.
