Scumbria, I think Arafat goofed at that time. I thought he was someone that liked brinkmanship. But I now realize that he is not that smart..

It is also important to realize that the Arabs, in particular Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon and to some extent Syria want the Palestenians to have their own homeland so that they can get off their backs and settle in a Palestenian homeland. But it was Arafat,s stupidity that we are where we are today. So the Arabs have decided to take things in their own hands. They are acquiescing for a call for Arafat to go and to work towards a statehood. What I fear is that Sharon and his folks may thwart all that through their violent postures and we would be back at square one.

So you ask why they did not grasp that opportunity. I say there is an opportunity now after Bush's speech. Let us all make sure we do not squander that away too. Let us have Arafat go, a negotiated exit. Then we have negotiated settlement for a Israeli state and a Palestenian state existing side by side.

No, Bush did not offer the Palestinians statehood.
