It is all political. Either you like Bush & Company's politics or you don't. I believe the word, "democracy" is irrelevant because another country will adopt a form of government that is suited to their own unique political and economic situation. They might call it a democratic government but we might not recognize it as an American democracy. Other countries may try to adopt what we call as our American culture but often they get it all mixed up. The first Christmas we spent in Hong Kong we laughed about the Christmas decorations we saw at our hotel. The metaphors were all mixed up. There was Santa but he was sitting next to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Cinderella was there as well. And there we were so we had a good time!! At this point in time, I do not believe that what works in the US may work in another country so, like you, I believe the governments in other countries will vary. I believe people should have the right to choose but I wonder how often they exercise that right or even have the right to choose their own leadership. Look at our own past presidential election. George W. Bush won by 500 plus votes in the state where his brother his governor. He lost the popular vote but the Supreme Court appointed him as President. Did he win fairly? I don't know. The notion that a government is democratic may belong to those who have the most money to elect their candidate as president, prime Minister or even chief. There is nothing to stop dictators from claiming that their country is democratic. There isn't a right or a wrong answer. There are only political questions and answers about government unless you can reach an agreement about ethical beliefs. And even ethical beliefs are based upon our political and economic politics. I am not sure that you can separate economic policy from political beliefs, and in the United States, under the Bush administration, you cannot separate economic and political policy from religious beliefs. What an interesting topic! JMOP
