FDR is a good example of extremism's attempt to take over the country. Luckily, in that case a patriotic Marine Corps general named Butler listened to the conspirators, and told Congress about it, that he was asked to lead a military takeover from FDR with 500,000 American troops. The conspirators were not hanged, unfortunately, or even jailed.
