oh kids can say the pledge and have no idea what they are saying- I totally agree. That is why it is problematic to have God in there. I'm sure any number of children think they are praying. I always try teaching the words of the pledge to whatever class I've subbed in. The children never understand the words, no matter what grade level it is. Allegiance, for example, not an easy concept for kids, pledge is somewhat easier, very rarely some child knows that is like a promise, but most do not. I'm sure some of them have been taught the words before, but who knows what percentage of kids forget the minute after they've been taught? Seems like it must be a big percentage. I have children in my class who still cannot recognize the word "said" even after seeing it every day for three weeks. Of course these are low performing kids, but still.

With words it is said the average child needs to see a word 7-11 times before they learn it. I imagine something similar is true for concepts. And of course concepts taught out of context, aren't going to hold any meaning.
