In any article that focuses on 'aging baby boomers' ...

...or quotes them, profiles their stories, etc., I always find the glaring omission of 'employability.'

The usual response to the Q posed by the reporter of "How do you FEEL losing everything you own in the stock market?" is:

"Well, I/we will just have to work longer."

Glossed right over by the reporters and interviewees is the white elephant -- which is not new with t6his generation -- that 'Corporate America' hates the 55+ers.

I'm sure, stockman_scott, that you might occasionally check out the SI Layoff thread.

This is the deal:

WHERE are people in their mid-to-late-50s-60s going to work? For that matter, beyond age 65?

WHERE? For whom? For which 'companies' and 'corporations?'

Many, many of those who spent careers in the private sector who are highly educated, seasoned experts in their fields (electrical engineering, for example) are never going to get another job, in case of layoff, at a fraction of their 'earning power' level.

I've already seen this right here in Austin on several fronts. 55+ mid-level corp execs laid off. With huge 'McMansions' and debt. And so tech specialized, there aren't any other jobs -- nationwide -- for them.

Some are 'retired' (forced) by the big ones.

Others were 'downsized out' thru M/A.

With no health care benefits (6 months best I've heard so far) and limited pensions. Which of course, can also become 'further diminished.'
