Petz,

I have to say I am a little confused about Nvidia as well. I expected that the next major revision, the one with new generation graphics core, would arrive at the end of the year, and the mid-year refresh was supposed to only add a bit of bandwidth.

My current interpretation is that the generation with new graphics core is early, and that's why the intermediate refresh was dropped.

Would anybody expect that their latest generation graphics core (GF4), even though this is the lowest member of the family, would make it to integrated chipset before the next generation core emerges?

Joe

Petz,

Is there a chance that the NVidia chipset news today is actually bad? I thought we heard quite recently that NVidia would not be improving any Socket A chipsets but would concentrate on Hammer. But if Hammer is delayed...

I think it is totally positive for AMD. GeForce4MX graphics, p1394, and USB2. I think nForce2 will be a great success for nVidia and AMD. I may buy one myself.

Pravin.
BTW, Intel would not be announcing layoffs unless things are really tight. Could be a bad day for the Nasdaq on Wednesday. Barrett has to sign off on Bryant's bullshit on August 14th. They have no choice but to start dealing with reality.

Petz, Re: I thought we heard quite recently that NVidia would not be improving any Socket A chipsets but would concentrate on Hammer.

Nvidia did cancel the nForce 615/620, a marginally improved nForce chipset with DDR333 support. You can find a story on it here:

extremetech.com

Note that when talking about "next generation nForce" they mean the nForce 2, not the nForce for Hammers. Nvidia always wanted to release a nForce successor with built-in GF4MX graphics (NV17 core). And I think that's very good news for AMD since it's by far the best integrated chipset available. Too bad NVDA still hasn't released a notebook chipset...
