I think you nailed it.

However, I can't see how there is any economic foundation for a secular bear, unless it would come from an unwinding of mindless index investing. The S&P index fund strategy made sense during a period of disinflation we had from 1982-2000 where declining interest rates and PE expansion lifted all boats.

I think the foundation now is growth, and it started manifesting itself in the late 90's.

It looks like we own the leaders now.
