But would children really be having their rights respected if their whole class was saying "One Nation Under Allah"? Would little Christian children, for example (if they were in the minority) be able to absorb the cognitive disconnect between the teacher leading a pledge to a God of another religion, and then asserting that our country was "under" this God, and still understand that wasn't a challenge to their religion? And of course Bill's understanding in 1st grade was only about the God of the documents at the time of the founding- could the wisdom of early elementary students extend to encompassing the notion, in kindergarten or first grade, that the God they mention in the pledge isn't their God, but is a ceremonial deistic symbol of whomever happens to control the power structure? and if they DO understand this, won't they grow up to be cynics like me? Wait.... That would be a good thing, imo. Nevermind.
