>> iow, this guy favors a zone favorable diet with moderate carbos.

yet, you didn't highlight that, did ya? sounds like you went to the bill clinton school of manipulation... ;-) <<

first of all nowhere was the zone diet mentioned. you are simply speculating that it is a zone favorable diet. second of all, like the article mentioned, people are so brainwashed with the common dogma of low-fat, that they just can't jump wholeheartedly onto the low-carb bandwagon. that is the appeal of the zone diet. he makes it sound not too radical so that it doesn't offend the knee-jerk feelings that creep up in the back of one's mind which says, "eating all this fat and meat can't be good for me."

that in no way means that atkins way is not the best way. it just means that most people have been taught to believe such deluded, dietary dogma that it will take a while for people to unlearn their prejuidices.

>> yes, one can starve themselves to lose weight. one CAN'T starve themselves to peak athletic and OPTIMIMAL HUMAN HEALTH. <<

gee, i don't recall dr atkins ever suggesting in any of his books that i have read that one should go even one day without eating. so give it a rest with this 'starve' stuff.

>> that is where the zone come in. atkins may very well be better than the current low fat dogma diets for many people. however, it isn't the optimal diet. <<

you have it backwards. the zone is not the optimal diet. the only reason it is somewhat popular is because unlike atkins who tells you the truth about the way you should eat, dr dears tells you that you can eat practically anything on his diet, just as long as you don't eat too much of certain restricted foods. he is not in the business of telling people the proper way to eat, he is in the business of trying to make his diet most palatable to the widest amount of people so he can sell more books.

>> many more people are on atkins than the zone. however, no world class athlete is on atkins, <<

you don't know that. except for a few minor differences, the zone can actually be a copycat of aspects of the atkins plan. people have this notion that under atkins you can never eat more than a certain minimal amount of carbs. dr atkins even says in his book that athletes can up their intakes of carbs because they will be exercising strenuously and burning them off. after you reach your goal weight atkins advises that you can slowly introduce as many carbs (preferrably healthier carbs) into your diet as need be, as long as you feel well and are not putting on weight. so an athlete who exercises strenuously will be able to ingest more carbs and not put on weight. depending on how insulin resistant one is, it just may happen that some athletes on atkins end up eating 40/30/30.

it's a real shame that you constantly refer to this lame argument that atkins is not optimum for high performance athletes. seeing how the atkins plan is easily tailored to everyone's needs, the atkins diet is far superior to the zone, which maintain strict portion and macronutrient ratios (40/30/30). the zone diet is inflexible, atkins is not.

this is the last time i'm going to explain this to you. if you can't get it this time, then there is just no hope for you.

the atkins way of eating was never specifically targeted for athletes the way the zone is. even so, the atkins program is flexible enough that it can easily fill the needs of the performance athlete.

the reason you do not hear athletes coming out to endorse the atkins plan is because the atkins diet was targeted for the millions of americans who suffer from obesity and chronic ailments. people associate the atkins diet with being overweight and suffering from chronic ailments. atkins didn't seek out a bunch of athletes so he could use them for endorsements. barry sears specifically took his diet to some athletes and said try it out. then he secured some high profile endorsements so he could sell a lot of books. there would be no reason for a high performance athlete to ever pick up an atkins book because a performance athlete is likely already in good health and not suffering from any major ailments. so the only way you would get endorsements from celberity athletes is if atkins was to seek them out, like sears did. atkins doesn't want to waste time seeking out already healthy athletes, he wants to cure sick people.

98% of americans are NOT high performance athletes! most americans ARE obese, lazy, and suffer from various chronic ailments related to diet. atkins has rightfully dedicated his life's work to trying to help the greatest number of people who suffer dietary related ailments. he has changed the dietary landscape and helped millions of people become healthier and has cured many instances of heart disease. then you have dr sears, a poor imitation who came along after atkins and runs around bragging about how many athletes supposedly master the "zone".
