'tie' in a rather 'inverse' ;'umbilical' relationship
I'm not sure what you mean. Intel and Dell still have a close relationship. Intel is stumbling in the 64bit processor arena and Dell may have to jump ship to AMD for high end CPUs. Intel has a very high overhead for a down market while Dell can limp along easier under reduced demand since they make their suppliers take all the risk. I read today that the White Box makers have not lost any market share to the computer price wars.
