If your religion has a very different take on secular things- then you have the right to keep
your child out of those activities by either absenting the child,

How is this different from having children not say the words "under God" in the pledge?

If a school, for example, has children read "Heather has two Mommies" and a parent objects on the grounds that homosexuality is a sin and their children should not be taught that it is an okay lifestyle, and the school says to the parent "we're going to read the book, you can have your child not read the book if you choose," that seems to me to be the same thing as the school saying "we're going to say "under God" in the pledge and if you don't want your child to say it, they don't have to."

In both cases, the beliefs of the parent cause the child to have to single him- or her-self out for different treatment.
