Hi OMD,

I hope you get your wish wrt unraveling the causes of autism. I think we may find that, like schizophrenia and even depression, it's actually a number of semi-discrete syndromes.

When I was in college majoring in special education, my goal was to teach in an all autistic classroom. In any of my working situations prior to being a mom, I always worked with several autistic children. I often do respite care for a young adult male who is autistic. Did I ever tell you about the autistic girl I worked with who built puzzles upside down. Upside down as in picture side down!! If you ask here where a particular puzzle piece was, she would make one of the only vocalizations she had, which sounded something like, "GGGNNNOOOO." It would be obvious that she was not happy with anyone trying to be part of her domain. That being puzzle building. The amazing thing was that if you turned your back for a mere 5 seconds, you could BET that the piece of the puzzle you ask her about would be in place.
